The Training Programme
What language is spoken during class?
All our lecturers at Flying Steps Diploma speak both German and English. Classes are conducted in both languages. All theory exams can be taken either in German or English.
Do you have an age limit?
At Flying Steps Diploma there is no formal age requirement for students, but we expect our applicants to have graduated from secondary school (equivalent to MSA, FH-Reife or Abitur) before entering our programme.
How much dance experience do I need to be accepted into the diploma programme?
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated students with exceptional artistic and physical potential for a career as a professional dancer. We expect a solid level in a least three of the following styles: Locking, Popping, Hip Hop, House, Breaking.
Is the Flying Steps Diploma training programme full-time?
The training programme is full-time. Classes run Monday to Friday from 9am–5pm, Saturday half-day. Time for extracurricular activities, projects, self-study time, and assignments needs to be allocated additionally.
Who provides accommodation for the students?
Flying Steps Diploma cannot arrange or provide accommodations for students; however, we are happy to give a compilation of useful information for finding accommodation in Berlin.
How much does the training programme cost?
The Flying Steps Diploma programme costs 359 Euro per month.
Application Proccess
How many stages are there in the audition process?
There are two stages to the audition process: a pre-selection by video and a final audition in person. Dancers who are shortlisted after the pre-selection are invited to attend our final auditions which all take place in Berlin.
Do all application documents (pictures/certificates, etc.) need to be submitted at the same time?
Yes, all the materials requested must be submitted at the same time and before the deadline set for your chosen audition. Please ensure that you have read the requirements fully before filling in the form. Have your documents, photographs, video links, and files available as you go through the form.

Application documents that are incomplete or that reach us by other means will not be considered.

The Video-Audition
What do I need to wear?
Please wear appropriate dancewear that enables us to see clear lines, placement, and technical and performance skills.
What do I need to include in my video audition?
Three videos of maximum 60 sec. duration each. These videos should cover three of the following styles: 

Funk, Popping, Hip Hop, House or Breaking. 

Optional: if the applicant wants to present another urban style, apart from the already mentioned styles (e.g. Krump or Waacking), an additional fourth video (maximum 60 sec.) may be uploaded.

A video talking about your artistic vision within the Street & Funk Culture. Where do you see yourself at the end of the training programme? (maximum 2 min., language: English)

Can you video dance to music?
Yes, please do. We want to be able to see the musicality and artistry of the dancer as well as their technique, so dancing to music is a very important part of the audition. The sound quality will not have an impact on the outcome of the audition.
Can I upload my videos directly to the application form?
No, you will need to upload your videos to a site such as YouTube, Vimeo, or use platforms like Google Drive or One Drive that are able to generate links, that you will be able to submit. Please do not use Dropbox or other sites which require download or which put a time limit on the availability of the link, as we cannot guarantee a link will be viewed before it expires.
Getting Your Results
When will the results of the video audition be sent?
We aim to send the results of the video audition as soon as possible – usually this happens within one month after receiving the application documents.

We kindly ask that you refrain from querying the status of your application.

Will I receive feedback after my audition?
We regret that we cannot guarantee feedback after the auditions. All dancers are encouraged to seek development advice from their regular dance teacher who is the best person to evaluate, accompany, and support their training and progress.
In-Person Audition
Where does the in-person audition take place?
The in-person audition for the selected candidates is taking place at the Flying Steps Academy in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
What will the in-person audition involve?
Advanced sequences in Locking, Popping, Hip Hop, House, Breaking, Freestyle, Street Repertoire/Choreography, foundations in Classical Ballet, a collaborative/creative task, an interview, a medical exam.
Do I need to prepare anything for the in-person audition?
You do not need to prepare anything specifically for the in-person audition. You will not need to perform a solo or bring a prepared dance piece.
What if I haven't learned one of the steps in my class?
Students are encouraged to ask the class teacher to explain and show them any steps they are unfamiliar with. The teachers always appreciate it when a dancer has a go at learning a new step. No student will be disadvantaged for not having previously learnt steps or terminology.
What is looked for at the audition?

What should I bring to my audition?
Please bring only necessary clothing and props to the audition as possible.

Wear appropriate dancewear that enables us to see clear lines, placement, and technical and performance skills.

Shoes: Please wear trainers for Street & Funk sections and ballet shoes for the ballet class.

Who will be on the audition panel?
The jury consists of the Flying Steps Diploma Director, the Head of Studies, and teaching staff members.
Will I have to do an interview at the audition?
If you are selected for the final part of the audition, there will be an interview. 

Questions you could think about to prepare yourself are: 

  • Why do you want to study on this programme? 
  • Who has influenced you from the world of dance?
  • What live performance/stage experience do you have?
  • Which professional performances have you seen that had an impact on you and your dancing?
  • What are your plans after graduation?
